A total of 4,404 inmates serving their sentence at 26 different correctional facilities and detention houses in the westernmost Indonesian province of Aceh were granted remission on the 75th anniversary of the nation’s independence.
Forty-six of the 4,404 inmates were set free, chief of the correctional division of the Aceh Provincial Office of Law and Human Rights, Nirhono Jatmokoadi, said here on Monday.
“The remission or sentence cut varied, ranging from one to six months. The remission was granted to convicts who displayed good conduct and had served a sentence of at least six months (for adults) and three months (for children),” he said.
Most of the prisoners granted the remission came from the Banda Aceh correctional facility (479 inmates), followed by the Langsa narcotic correctional facility (370 inmates), Lhokseumawe correctional facility (318), Meulaboh correctional facility (300), and Kuala Simpang correctional facility (242).
The others were from Rayeuk correctional facility (219 inmates), Kutacane correctional facility (181), Blangpidie correctional facility (73), Bireuen correctional facility (208), Blangkejeren correctional facility (135), and Idi correctional facility (172).
The Law and Human Rights Ministry also reduced the prison sentence of 180 inmates lodged at the Banda Aceh detention house, 176 at the Jantho detention house, 30 at the Sabang detention house, 228 at the Sigli detention house, 121 at the Bener Meriah detention house, 219 at the Takengon detention house, 77 at the Tapaktuan detention house, and 107 at the Singkil detention house.
“The 46 inmates were immediately set free after they were granted remission, including 18 (prisoners) from the Langsa narcotic correctional facility,” he said.
