Tapaktuan, Aceh (ANTARA Aceh) - The Maritime and Fisheries Office of South Aceh District is building a 100-ton cold storage at Fish Port in Labuhan Tarok, Meukek Sub-district.

The Head of Maritime and Fisheries Office of South Aceh, Cut Yusminar, here on Thursday stated that the cold storage, which was built with national funds worth more than Rp15 billion (about US$1.1 million) in 2017, is an international-class facility.

"The construction of this cold storage is the first project in Aceh province. A similar project was initiated in Simeulue District in 2017, but South Aceh had realized it earlier," Yusminar noted.

So far, the project has been 60 percent developed, and it is expected to be completed by the end of December 2017.

"This infrastructure to support fishery sector in South Aceh is planned to be functional by January 2018," she remarked.

In addition to Labuhan Tarok, the office has built a 50-ton cold storage in Labuhanhaji and in Lhok Pawoh, Sawang sub-district, with a capacity of 10 tons.

"Thank God, the cold storages in Labuhanhaji and Lhok Pawoh have been operating" she exclaimed, hoping that the cold storages could increase and improve the economy of the local fishermen.

The amount of fresh fish caught by the South Aceh fishermen reaches hundreds of tons every month. The fish includes those of super quality too, with an export value.

"South Aceh has the longest coastline in Aceh and has abundant maritime resources; therefore, we prioritize the construction of facilities that support fishery sectors," Yusminar pointed out.
