Singkil, Aceh (Antaranews Aceh) - A couple of man and woman found committing illicit sex against the sharia law were publicly punished with a flogging of 100 lashes each at the town square of Pulo Sarok, Aceh Singkil in the province of Aceh on Monday.
The flogging of Noverius Zay (35) and Dewi Sartika (32) were witnessed by Regent of Aceh Singkil Dulmusrid and other district authorities and thousands of local people.
Four men were given the task of flogging, two for each of the convicts with each of the executioners allowed to lash 50 times.
The public prosecutor Nofriady SH MHum told reporters the two were convicted for offence of the Aceh regional criminal law on sexual offence by the Singkil Sharia Court.
"Thanks God, the two have had their punishment that they could go home," the prosecutor said after the flogging was over.
The executioners stopped the flogging several times when the convicts were grimacing in pain. The flogging continued after consulting with medical officials who said the two could sustain
the punishment.
An official of the Islamic Law Office Maeridho said the case was about sexual offence three months ago in Danau Paris, Aceh Singkil.
The two were once married people. Noverius Zay is a widower and Dewi Sartika was separated from her husband.
Many people had complained often seeing them meeting secretly in a house. Danau Paris police came to prevent the two from being attacked by the angry people.
"The two claimed they had married but could not produce documents to back up their claim, therefore they were punished for illicit sex," Maeridho said.
